Good Ol' JR Is Officially Back With The WWE

CageSide - Jim Ross rejoined WWE for what was thought to just be a tribute to Undertaker at WrestleMania 33 — in what turned out to likely be Taker’s final match. There are additional wrinkles just being discovered, however, as Ross revealed to FOX Sports he has actually signed a two-year deal with WWE to do, well, any number of things.

“It has a specific number of dates that I’m obligated to work, which I think is good for me,” Ross said. “So look at it this way: I got my jersey back. I got brought back to my home team, and my opportunities back in WWE, I’m sure, will be multi-fold.

The circumstances aren’t the best, but it’s so great that JR is back with the WWE. After being fired (he for sure did not retire) in 2013, JR made his first appearance on WWE television last night to do commentary on the Undertaker’s final match. It was a great moment, as JR’s wife died just over a week ago, and WWE was his home for so many years.

I don’t want to understate this, JR was such a huge part of the Attitude Era, RAW winning the Monday Night Wars with WCW, and WWE becoming the global empire they are today. The way he called matches with enthusiasm and knowledge, and his ability to tell stories captivated the audience in ways no other wrestling broadcaster could. His ability to make big matches and big spots within matches feel so important has never been duplicated by anyone else.

JR belongs with WWE. With the sad passing of his wife, it is comforting that he is back with his second family that he knows so well and who treasures him so much. While he won’t be behind the mic full time, hopefully we get more of him sprinkled in, because last night showed us that he’s still the best in the biz.
